Cobb New Horizons Band is a member of the New Horizons International Music Association. This international network has over 170 member groups throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, and Ireland.
BACKGROUND OF NEW HORIZONS
The first New Horizons group was founded at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, in 1991 by Roy Ernst, Ph.D. Behind every great movement stands an inspiring leader, and Dr. Ernst’s dedication and untiring work are directly responsible for the many New Horizons bands, orchestras, and musical ensembles performing today.
BACKGROUND OF COBB NEW HORIZONS BAND
The Cobb New Horizons Band was formed in September 2005 (originally as the East Cobb New Horizons Band) with 18 musicians under the direction of Ms. Marla Feeney. Mr. George Broom assumed the role of Music Director from August 2007 until March 2016. Dr. Charles Jackson then served as Music Director from April 2016 through June 2026. In August 2026, the band welcomed its current Music Director, Mr. David Starnes. Today, the ensemble has grown to over 110 members.
In addition to the main concert band, two affiliate groups form the Cobb New Horizons Jazz Ensembles. Directed by Rob Opitz, these ensembles regularly perform at senior communities, churches, civic gatherings, and other local events.
Frequently Asked Questions: (click the triangle to see the answer to a question)
Where does the band rehearse?
We rehearse Towne View Baptist Church located at 950 Shiloh Rd NW, Kennesaw, Ga 30144. See the general map below or to be more precise use this Instructional Map.

When does the band rehearse?
We begin rehearsal promptly at 11:00 AM on Monday morning and dismiss at 1:00, with a break in the middle of the rehearsal time. The jazz ensemble starts at 9:00 AM and rehearses until 10:30 AM.
What if I cannot attend regularly?
Regular attendance is very important as we prepare for performances and improve our skills. However, everyone has many other things going on in life and cannot always attend every rehearsal. All of us miss on occasion, but we keep our section leaders and our director informed.
How often does the band perform?
At busy times we have averaged one performance per month. During certain seasons, this will vary. Venues include seasonal concerts at KSU’s Bailey Performance Center, Marietta Performance Center, Woodstock Amphitheater, and Lassiter Concert Hall, various secondary schools of all levels, churches, community events, and senior communities. Our current schedule is published on the home page.
What if I have not played for years?
Many of our members have been in the same situation, putting an instrument aside in some cases for decades. Although the band does require musical experience, when first starting back, everyone in the band understands the challenge of rebuilding physical stamina and technique.
Are band dues required?
Yes. Each member pays monthly dues of $15 (paid as $45 quarterly). If you come to try out the band, your first month’s dues are waived. Dues help the band to pay our director, rent for rehearsal space, and to purchase music and equipment.
Is there a cost for the music?
The cost of music is covered by paying dues.
Is there a uniform for performances?
Yes. The band wears a black golf shirt with the Cobb New Horizons Band logo, khaki pants, a black belt, black shoes, and black socks. Shirts are available in both men’s and ladies’ sizes. There is a reasonable cost for the shirt (slightly more for 2XL+ sizes). For formal performances we wear all black dress wear (dress shirt, dress slacks, black belt, black socks, black shoes).
Do I need additional equipment other than my instrument?
Yes. Each band member supplies his own music stand which will be necessary for most performances. Most members use the Peak SMS-20 black portable music stand with a carrying case. It is available from various music stores or online. You will find several options available on our Member Resource Page
How is the band governed?
The band members, annually, elect the officers of the band who make up the executive committee. The committee meets monthly to discuss matters of band business.
